CONTEMPORARY AND TRADITIONAL AFRICAN DANCE

Etienne Cakpo

Etienne Cakpo is a professional dancer, choreographer and musician from Benin, West Africa. He teaches and performs traditional African dance from Benin as well as contemporary African dance styles, and has been building his dance repertoire for over twenty years. In addition to conducting personal research to learn regional dances and musical traditions in his country, Etienne has worked in remote areas of Benin with international ethnomusicologists, musicians and filmmakers. Currently based in Seattle, Etienne contributes regularly to the cultural arts community in Western Washington, and performs in solo events and group shows. He is director of Gansango Music & Dance.

Majinn

Tues 6:00pm-7:30pm

Mjinn (They/Them) is a queer, disabled, mixed Black dance artist and educator who utilizes their training in multiple dance forms to find and express their whole self. Majinn works to help guide people in becoming more confident and connected in their bodies, find joy in their movement and be able to speak their voices through Black social dance forms. One of Majinn’s main goals in dance is to continue to spread the histories of street/club dance forms in and out of academia so that the cultures are learned and more respected. Majinn also aims to give back to the communities that these art forms were created from through any way they can. You can find Majinn under Majinn_Moves on Instagram.
